146: Punic Wars ended

The Third Punic War, the last of three between Rome and Carthage, came to an end this day in 146 BC, culminating in the final destruction of Carthage, the enslavement of its people, and Roman hegemony over the Mediterranean.

Andreas Papandreou

Andreas Papandreou, born this day in 1919, formed the Panhellenic Socialist Movement party shortly after the collapse of the Greek military dictatorship in 1974 and served as prime minister of Greece in 1981–89 and 1993–96.
